The 17th APEC Oceans and Fisheries Working Group Meeting successfully held

The 17th APEC Oceans and Fisheries Working Group (OFWG) meeting was successfully held online at New Zealand on August 17-18, 2021.

The meeting was chaired by OFWG Lead Shepherd Ms. Alicia Gallardo. Representatives from 18 APEC economies, including Australia, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong, China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Philippines, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, USA, Vietnam, as well as guests from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), APEC Virtual Working Group on Marine Debris (VWG), The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the Stanford Center for Ocean Solutions, and other organizations attended the meeting.

The meeting adopted the summary report of the OFWG16 meeting, the APEC Ocean and Fisheries Working Group (OFWG) Strategic Plan 2021-2023 and the OFWG Term of References 2022-2025, reported on the implementation of the roadmap to combat IUU fishing, Roadmap Implementation Program and Marine Debris Control Roadmap Implementation Program in APEC economies, reviewed the status of APEC projects undertaken and underway, proposed and initiated new projects in the field of ocean and fisheries, and shared the themes and priority areas of the OFWG meeting to be hosted by Thailand in 2022.

Since its establishment in 2011, the APEC Marine Sustainable Development Center has continuously participated in the OFWG meetings. At this meeting, representatives of the Center introduced the work carried out in the past 10 years and reported on the ongoing preparation of the APEC Marine Sustainable Development Report III and the Marine Spatial Planning Training Program, and was recognized by OFWG. APEC economies expect to “improve the participation of the APEC Marine Sustainable Development Center as a cooperation platform for APEC economies”, and to strengthen Asia-Pacific ocean cooperation and support APEC ocean mainstreaming process.
