Ocean and Coastal Carbon Sink Workshop successfully held in Xiamen

Ocean and Coastal Carbon Sink Workshop, sponsored by the Third Institute of Oceanography of the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) was successfully held in Xiamen on April 16, 2021. The workshop was co-organized by the Marine Ecology Committee of the Chinese Ecological Society, Fujian Ocean Society, and the Fujian Provincial Key Laboratory of Marine Ecological Protection and Restoration.

The workshop attracted 40 prestigious experts and scholars from Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, South China Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shandong University, Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, East China Geological Survey Bureau of Nonferrous Metals, Jiangsu Province, First Institute of Oceanography, MNR, Second Institute of Oceanography, MNR and Third Institute of Oceanography, MNR, Development Research Center of China Geological Survey, National Geological Library of China and etc. Officials from Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Natural Resources attended the meeting, with Academician Jiao Nianzhi and Academician Dai Minhan delivered the keynote speeches.

At the meeting, Dr. Cai Feng, Director General of Third Institute of Oceanography, MNR began by expressing heartfelt thanks to all the participants, and overview of Ocean Carbon Neutral research carried out by Third Institute of Oceanography. Shan Weidong, Counsel of Department of Science and Technology, MNR brought in the instructions on commitment and implementation plan to become Carbon Neutral from MNR. The workshop adopted 2 keynote speeches and 16 themed lectures, thus giving opportunities for fully discussions and exchanges on relevant topics.

In conclusion, official from Department of Science and Technology, MNR called on all the related scholars and experts to conduct thorough investigation on China’s Carbon Sink, to research on the mechanism and approaches of Ocean Carbon Neutral, and he said we should make joint efforts to uphold China's commitment to peak the carbon dioxide emissions and go carbon neutral.
