HISTORY OF THE THIRD INSTITUTE OF OCEANOGRAPHY,
MINISTRY OF NATURAL RESOURCES

In August 1958, CPC Fujian Provincial Party Committee and Fujian Provincial People’s Committee decided to establish the Fujian Institute of Oceanography, which was prepared by Xiamen University in conjunction with Fujian Fisheries Bureau. In August 1959, Fujian Provincial Science Committee replied to the Party Committee of Xiamen University, agreeing the joint run by Fujian Science Branch and Xiamen University. In November, the Marine Biology Research Office of Fujian Institute of Oceanography held its inaugural meeting, marking the formal establishment of the Fujian Institute of Oceanography.

In November 1961, the Science and Technology Commission of CPC East China Bureau decided that the Fujian Institute of Oceanography was under the dual leadership of East China Branch and Science and Technology Commission of Fujian Province.

In May 1962, the Chinese Academy of Sciences approved the renaming of the Institute of Oceanography of Fujian Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences as East China Institute of Oceanography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

In October 1965, the State Science and Technology Commission approved the handover of East China Institute of Oceanography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to State Oceanic Administration for management. In December, East China Branch of Chinese Academy of Sciences completed the handover with State Oceanic Administration, and the latter decided to rename it as Third Institute of Oceanography, State Oceanic Administration.

In September 2018, the State Commission Office of Public Sectors Reform approved the inclusion of Third Institute of Oceanography, State Oceanic Administration in the Ministry of Natural Resources, which was renamed as Third Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources.
